Treatment of allergic rhinitis using syndrome differentiation based on the concept of “holism” in TCM.

Abstract: Allergic rhinitis belongs to the category of “Bi Qiu” in traditional Chinese medicine. The pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis is associated with qi-deficiencies of the lung, spleen, and kidney, and it is indicated in wind chill. Among these, lung deficiency is the most important pattern associated with allergic rhinitis. Allergic rhinitis is categorized into episodes and in remission for syndrome differentiation and treatment. Disease episodes are treated according to the four patterns of syndrome—deficiency of the lung and spleen, muggy in lung channel, deficiency of the spleen and kidney, and evil hide in shaoyang. In remission, interventions at the key time nodes(such as the winter solstice, summer solstice, vernal equinox, and autumn equinox)constitute preventive treatment for the disease. Simultaneously, application of other external treatment strategies such as acupuncture and point-application aid in treating the disease. In addition, allergic rhinitis can also be prevented by maintaining a healthy balance in diets, daily life, emotions, and other factors.
