Abstract: To evaluate the relationship between human papilloma virus(HPV) infection and diseases in the nose and the larynx, such as squamous epithelial and adenoepithelial carcinoma, papilloma, polyp, and inflammation. MethodsExpressions of HPV6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33,42,51,52,56 and 58 were determined using SP staining of immunohistochemistry. ResultsExpression percentage of HPV was 41.38% in squamous carcinoma, 20.00% in adenocarcinoma, 47.62% in squamous papilloma, 20.00% in glandular papilloma, 7.14% in squamous polyp,3.57% in adenopolyp, and not found in allergic rhinith and nasosinusitis. Correlation analysis showed that there was no significant difference (P>0.05) in HPV infection rate between squamous carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, between squamous papilloma and adenopapilloma, or between squamous polyp and adenopolyp, but there was a significant difference (P<0.05) in HPV infection rate between squamous carcinoma plus squamous papilloma and adenocarcinoma plus adenopapilloma, and also there was a significant difference (P<0.05) in HPV infection rate between squamous carcinoma plus papilloma and polyp, and between adenocarcinoma plus papilloma and polyp. ConclusionHPV infection may have a correlation with the genesis and development of tumors in the nose and the larynx. The probability of HPV infecting the squamous epithelium is higher than that of HPV infecting the adenoepithelium.
