Pre-operative irrigation of conjunctival sac using 0.5% povidone-iodine in preventing endophthalmitis after cataract surgery

Abstract: Objective To explore whether the irrigation of conjunctival sac using 0.5% povidone-iodine would prevent endophthalmitis after cataract surgery. Methods A total of 4 000 patients underwent cataract surgeries in our hospital from October 2012 to October 2013 were randomly enrolled in this study. All were divided into two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group used 0.5% povidone-iodine for conjunctiva sac irrigation before surgery and the control group used tobramycin. The bacterial rate of the conjunctival sac, the ocular surface side effects and post-operative endophthalmitis incidence were evaluated. Results The bacterial rate had statistically significant difference between the two groups (P<0.05); the ocular surface side effect had no statistically significant difference (P>0.05); There was no intraocular inflammation appeared in the experimental group, however, two cases of endophthalmitis occurred in the control group. Conclusion Tobramycin could be replaced by 0.5% povidone-iodine for pre-operative irrigation of conjunctival sac.
