Abstract: To investigate the common causes of vocal cord paralysis(VCP) in the elder. Methods: Ninetytwo patients with VCP were analyzed. All the patients underwent examination by indirect laryngoscope or electrolaryngostroboscopy. Results: Fiftytwo cases with VCP were caused by neck and thoracic tumor, 15 by neck and thoracic openations, 7 by accidence of brain blood vessel, 3 by skull trauma wound, 2 by trachea intubation, 3 by heart disease of hypertension and hypertrophy of left ventricle, 4 by tuberculosis, and 1 by hysteria. No obvious reason was found in 5 cases. Conclusion: Patients with VCP should be systemly examined to find the reasons of disease. Malignant tumors should be excluded or diagnosed early, and we should consider their possibility to elders with vocal cord paralysis.
