Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the incidence of pharyngeal xeransis and pharyngeal paraesthesia following uvulopalatopharyngoplasty(UPPP) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Method: Fifty-two patients were subjected to UPPP and followed up. Questionnaires were used to compare the incidence of pharyngeal xeransis and pharyngeal paraesthesia between them and healthy controls. Results: During a 5-year follow-up, 16 of the 46 patients excluding diabetics had pharyngeal xeransis and 22 had pharyngeal paraesthesia. In the control group, 12 had pharyngeal xeransis and 12 had pharyngeal paraesthesia. There was a significant difference between the two groups. Conclusions: Pharyngeal xeransis and pharyngeal paraesthesia are more common in patients after UPPP than in healthy adults, which may be a result of wound excitation and cicatricle concrescence. The timbre is possibly not changed.

Key words: Sleep apnea syndromes, Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, Pharyngeal paraesthesia, Pharyngeal xeransis
