Abstract: To evaluate a 90 degree laryngeal endoscope used in diagnosis and treatment of foreign bodies in the hypopharynx. Methods102 patients with foreign bodies lodged in the hypopharynx but which had failed to be identified with indirect laryngoscopy were reexamined under video with a 8?mm,90 degree laryngeal endoscope from Mar.2003 to Sep.2007. Results98 cases with foreign bodies in hypopharynx were found and removed successfully under laryngeal endoscope. 4 cases which had failed to be identified foreign bodies in hypopharynx were referred for xray examination, foreign bodies were embedded in the entrance of the esophagus. ConclusionForeign body lodged in the hypopharynx can be easily located and removed under 90 degree laryngeal endoscope, which has the advantages of good illumination, clear visualization, and convenient manipulation.The technique has been proven to be efficient, safe, well tolerated and to reduce missed diagnosis.
