Tracheobronchial foreign bodies in 846 children

Abstract:

Objective  To investigate the  best therapeutic method for removal of foreign bodies in the respiratory tract. Methods   846 cases of foreign body in the respiratory tract were retrospectively analyzed. 827 cases had foreign bodies taken out by bronchoscopy under total intravenous anesthesia, and 19 cases who had severe infections or had pneumothorax or endermic emphysema used antibiotics before the operation. Result  In 842 cases foreign bodies  were successfully taken out by one operation and in 4 cases by two operations.  None had a tracheotomy, thoracotomy or died. Conclusion   Tracheobronchial foreign bodies in children are  more frequent in otolaryngological diseases and should be diagnosed in an early stage.
