Presbycusis, also known as age-related hearing loss(AHL), is characterized by high-frequency hearing loss. With the aging of the society, AHL-related morbidity is increasing. Autophagy plays a pivotal role in central nervous system senescence and neurodegeneration. Autophagy can transfer toxic molecules and organelles to lysosomes, a process vital to the health and survival of neurons. The development of the inner ear is regulated by autophagy and plays an important role in maintaining the morphology and function of auditory hair cells.
