Tongue base radiofrequency combined withuvulopalatopharyngoplasty for OSAHS

Abstract: :To investigate the effect of tongue base radiofrequency ablation (RFA) combined with uvulopalatopharyngoplasty(UPPP) for severe obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). Methods: The obstruction in both the oropharynx and the hypopharynx were determined by fiberoptic pharyngolaryngoscopy and Müller examination in 34 patients with severe OSAHS. All the patients accepted tongue base RFA plus UPPP. Results: The tongue base significantly reduced postoperatively, the apnea hypopnea index(AHI) was remarkably lower , and the minimum SaO2 was remarkably higher(P<0.001) 6 months and 1 year after treatment.　The response rates were 100.00% (6month) and 91.18%(1year ). Conclusion: Tongue base RFA combined with UPPP is effective for severe OSAHS.
