Voice changes after parathyroidectomy in patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism

Abstract: Objective To investigate the changes in voice after parathyroidectomy in patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism. Method This study involved 29 patients, including 11 women(mean age, 50±12 years)and 18 men(mean age, 43±12 years). All patients underwent computerized voice analysis for F0, jitter, shimmer, and harmony-to-noise ratio(HNR)and maximum phonation time(MPT)and serum calcium concentration assessment preoperatively and 5 days postoperatively. The serum parathyroid hormone concentration was measured pre- and post-operatively. Results There was no difference between the pre- and post-operative F0, jitter, shimmer, and HNR. The MPT decreased after parathyroidectomy(P<0.05). Conclusion The MPT decreased significantly after parathyroidectomy remaining serum calcium concentration on secondary hyperparathyroidism. However, no changes were observed in F0, jitter, shimmer, and HNR.
