Effect of hypertonic saline on mucociliary clearance in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis

Abstract: Objective: To explore the effect of hypertonic saline on nasal mucociliary clearance in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. Methods: The saccharin test was used to determine the mucociliary clearance before irrigation and after normal saline or hypertonic saline irrigation. On the following days, an alternative solution was used to repeat the treatment and retest the mucociliary clearance time. Results: The normal saccharin clearance time of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis was 19.62 minutes, and it changed to 17.74 and 13.22 minutes after the normal saline and hypertonic saline irrigation, respectively. Compared with the normal group, the mucociliary clearance was not significantly changed in the normal saline group (P>0.05), but significantly decreased in the hypertonic saline group (P<0.01). Conclusion: Hypertonic saline can significantly improve the nasal mucociliary clearance time, while normal saline has no such effect.
