Ultrastructure of the surfactant lamellar bodies in the nasal mucosa of guinea pigs

Abstract: Objective To observe the ultrastructure of surfactant lamellar bodies in the nasal mucosa. Method The nasal mucosa of 8 normal guinea pigs were observed. Result Lamellar bodies were scattered in the nasal mucosa and they were circular, lamellar- and coil-like small bodies with compact electron densities. Conclusion The nasal mucosa has lamellar bodies whose secreted surfactants play a role in nasal function and pathophysiology.
