Expression and clinical significance of cox-2 protein in nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Abstract:

Objective  To investigate expression and its clinical significance of COX-2 protein in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods  The immunohistochemical method and Western blot method were used to determine expression of COX-2 protein in specimens of 47 cases (33 cases by IHC and 14 by Western Blot ) of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and 24 cases of normal nasopharyngitis tissues. Results  Positive staining rate of COX-2 in specimens of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (81.8%) was significantly higher than that of normal nasopharyngitis tissues (25%)(P=0.001). Western Blot assay revealed that the relative COX-2 protein level was 1.258±0.034 and 0.487±0.076 respectively in the two tissues,which was significantly higher in nasopharyngeal carcinoma(P=0.000). Conclusion  Over-expression of COX-2 may play a crucial role in the carcinogenesis and progression of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, selectivity COX-2 inhibiter may become an important chemotherapy drug for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
