Abstract:

Objective  To investigate the effect of open method tympanoplasty combined with mastoid obliteration and titanium mesh and the reconstruction of the attic wall. Methods  32 cases of cholesteatoma or skeletal ulcer otitis media accepted the open method tympanoplasty combined mastoid obliteration and titanium mesh and reconstruction of the attic wall after radical mastoidectomy. Results  The external auditory canals of 30 ears were normal in appearance. The transplanted membrane in 29 ears survived. The dry-ears rate was 90.62% and the average time till dry-ears was 15.89±4.02 days. The air-conducting hearing levels of average language frequency were enhanced by over 15dBHL in 27 ears. An air-bone gap of less than 20dBHL was achieved in 22 ears. Conclusion  The anatomical structure and physiological function of the external auditory canal and middle ear can recover after the above mentioned treatment with a satisfactory long-term effect in improving hearing.
