Surgical treatment of aural atresia/stenosis in 15 cases

Abstract:

Objective       To investigate  suitable surgical treatment for aural atresia or stenosis.  Method      15 cases of aural atresia or stenosis  who received canalplasty were reviewed. Postoperative follow-up ranged from onehalf to two years. Result      In 14 ears,  the external auditory canal was  enlarged. However, the atresia occured again in the other 1 ear. Conclusion      Different surgical procedures can be applied in aural atresia or stenosis depending on the factors, such as congenital or acquired, and with or without inflammation of tympanic-mastoid area. The keys of the operation are canal-plasty and obtainment of a wide external auditory opening. The defect area must be covered by a skin graft.
