Recent developments in assessing the effect of LASIK on the retina

Abstract:

The laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is the primary method for the correction of myopia. A transient elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) and the impact of laser cutting during LASIK are considered to be probable causes affecting the retina and optic nerve. Basic research confirmed that the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and retinal microstructure changes may occur as a result of the negative pressure suction exceeding 30 seconds. Also, the clinical study supported that the present LASIK would momentarily increase the retinal thickness of the macular central fovea，but it has no significant effect on RNFL thickness.
