Methods From January 2001 to December 2011,the clinical data of 1076 cases of suspected foreign body in the trachea and bronchus were reviewed. Among them, 900 cases were confirmed by rigid bronchoscopy under the general anesthesia. The foreign bodies were removed via transoral bronchoscopy in 885 cases, tracheotomy in 10 cases, and thoracotomy in 5 cases. Results There were 817 plant foreign bodies, 24 animal foreign bodies, and 59 metal or plastic foreign bodies. 333 foreign bodies located in the left main bronchus, 397 in the right main bronchus , 77 in the trachea, 16 in the subglottic area. After the operation, there were one pulmonary infection, 1 pneumothorax and mediastinal emphysema, and 3 heart failure cases. 845 patients came within Shandong province, while the other 55 cases didn’t. Conclusion To prevent postoperative complications and guarantee the success of treatment, timely diagnosis and immediate bronchoscopy are crucial for the tracheobronchial foreign body patients.
