Abstract: To observe the clinical effectiveness of manual nucleus fragmentation in senile cataracts. MethodsManual nucleus fragmentation and rigid intraocular lens implantation were performed on 98 patients (107 eyes) suffering from senile cataracts. The visual acuity, corneal astigmatism and complications were observed for 3 months postoperatively. Results Visual acuity of 76 (71.03%) eyes was up to 0.5, of 20 (22.47%) eyes between 0.8 and 1.0 at the 1st week postoperatively. Mean corneal astigmatism was not significantly different before surgery and at the 3rd month after surgeries(P>0.05). Posterior capsule rupture occurred in 4 cases (3.74%). ConclusionManual nucleus fragmentation for senile cataracts is effective and safe with satisfactory visual acuity after the operations.
