Abstract:

Objective    To observe the clinical features of tooth maxillofacial development in children with  enlarged adenoid. Methods    Craniofacial morphology was studied by computerized cephalometric analysis in 68 children with adenoid hypertrophy (A/N≥0.71). The patients were divided into three groups: group A (25 patients aged 3 to 4 years, course of 2-3 years), group B (27 patients aged 5 to 6 years, course of 2-4 years) and group C(16 patients aged 7 to 8 years, course of 3-5 years). 20 healthy children were enrolled (3-8 years old) as the control group. Results    Compared with the control group, the ANB angle and the up and down central incisor angle were reduced in groups A, B and C(P<0.01), while ANB, FH -MP, Y axis Angle, and ABSequivalent PNS values were increased (P<0.01). Compared with group C, ANB, FH-MP, Y axis Angle, and ABS-PNS equivalent were decreased and the tooth angle were increased in group A (P<0.05). In group C, SNB value was decreased and L1-NB increased compared with the control group(P<0.05), but the two had no significantly differences between the rest groups. Conclusion    Adenoid hypertrophy can result in a great impact on children′s dental maxillofacial growth which is more obvious with an increase of the course.
