Effect of endoscopic sinus surgery on airway resistance and olfactory function in patients with sinusitis and nasal polyps.

Abstract: Objective To study the effect of endoscopic sinus surgery on airway resistance and olfactory function in patients with sinusitis and nasal polyps. Methods Ninety patients with sinusitis and nasal polyps in our hospital from April 2012 to March 2015 were randomly divided into the observation group and the control group. The observation group received endoscopic sinus surgery, while the control group received conventional surgery. Then airway resistance, olfactory function, nasal cavity volume(NCV), nasal minimum cross-sectional area(NMCA)were compared between the two groups. Results 1, 4, 8 and 12 weeks after the surgery, the nasal airway resistance were significantly lower in the observation group than in the control group(P<0.05)and the olfactory function scores were significantly lower in the observation group than in the control group(P<0.05); 8 weeks and 12 weeks after the surgery, NCV and NMCA were significantly higher in the observation group than in the control group(P<0.05). Conclusion Nasal endoscopic sinus surgery can help to increase NCV and NMCA, reduce airway resistance and improve the sense of smell functions.
