Abstract: To improve the curative effect of patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS), we designed and created a new surgery method to enlarge the size of nasopharynx. Methods: Seven male patients with moderate OSAHS since January 2006 were involved in this study. Hard palate was shortened by resecting a portion of posterior hard palate and both hard and soft palate were advanced anteriorly with the surgery of uvulopalatoplasty. Results: All patients retrieved good sleep and energy and the snore disappeared after operation. Conclusion: The results of the study suggested that palatal advancement nasopharyngeal enlargement pharyngoplasty is a more effective treatment with a lower complication rate than standard surgical therapy (uvulopalatopharyngoplasty) for patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Key words: Hard palate short, Obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome, Uvulopalatoplasty(UPP), Soft and hard palate advancement
