Abstract: Objective To investigate the expression of neurokinin-1 receptor(NK-1R)in nasal mucosa tissue from patients with intranasal mucosal contact point headaches. Methods The expression of NK-1R was detected by immunohistochemical staining method in mucosal contact points and non-contact point from 18 patients respectively. The mRNA level of NK-1R and substance P(SP)was detected by real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)at NK-1R positive cells at mucosal contact point and non-contact point respectively. Results NK-1R was mainly located in acinar epithelial cells, inflammatory cells and nerve fiber of contact point nasal mucosa. The mRNA of SP and NK-1R were up-regulated in mucosal contact point compared with those in mucosal non-contact point. Conclusion NK-1R, as a mediator of pain transmission, may play an important role in the occurrence of intranasal mucosal contact point headaches.
