Abstract: Objective To provide a reference for the clinical treatment of dizziness in Chinese herbal medicine by analyzing the prescriptions of modern famous veteran Chinese medicine practitioners for vertigo and compatibility rules. Methods The researchers in this study collected and sorted medical records on vertigo in seven books in accordance with the inclusion and exclusion criteria. After recording the frequency, four properties, five kinds of flavors, meridian entry and action classification of drugs, the researchers used the Origin 2022 software to draw radar charts of Chinese herbal medicine actions and medicinal properties. IBM SPSS Modeler 18.0 and Cytoscape 3.9.1 were used to display the core herbal medicine network, and the R 4.2.0 software was used to analyze and visualize the correlation and association rules. Additionally, SPSS Statistics 26.0 was used for cluster analysis of high-frequency drugs. Results A total of 178 medical records, 297 prescriptions and 289 Chinese herbal medicine data were collected for the management of vertigo. The total frequency was 3 684. Among them, the Chinese herbs were mainly tonics, liver-soothing drugs, heat-clearing drugs, exterior-relieving drugs and blood-activating and stasis-resolving drugs. The four properties of the herbs were mainly cold and warm, the distribution of the five kinds of flavor included mostly sweet, bitter and acrid the main meridians were the liver, spleen and lung. Thirty-seven herbs were used ≥ 30 times. The top forty drug pairs with high correlation coefficients were mostly tonics, blood-activating and stasis-resolving drugs and liver-soothing drugs. The most used two-drug pair was “Fossilia Mastodi Ossis and Concha Ostreae” and there were six groups of three-drug combinations. There were four new prescriptions for the management of vertigo. Conclusion The treatment of vertigo by the famous veteran Chinese medicine practitioners was mainly with liver-soothing drugs, qi and blood-nourishing drugs, phlegm-resolving and dampness-eliminating drugs, blood-activating and orifice-dredging drugs, and more, which reflect the basic principles of clinical management of dizziness. The study provides a theoretical basis for the research and development of clinical Chinese patent medicines and new drugs by exploring and analyzing the pattern of medication in the management of vertigo by famous veteran Chinese medicine practitioners, and helps to inherit and carry forward the valuable experience of vertigo treatment from famous veteran Chinese medicine practitioners.
