Anatomy of the submental island flap

Abstract: To study the anatomy for the submental artery(SA) and submental veins(SV). Method：The area of the SA and the SV flaps in 21 human adult cadavers was measured. Results：The beginning diameter of SA was （1.41±0.32）mm, the largest diameter of SV was （2.41±0.91）mm, and the length and width of the flap were（78.2±13.9）mm and（55.6±5.4）mm, respectively. Conclusion：SA is a long, superficial and wide routine branch of facial artery with a routine drainage vein, and therefore it is perfect for mandibular basal flap.
