Tunnel flaps repairing the defects in external nasal tumor resection.

Abstract: Objective To evaluate the effects of tunnel flaps to repair the defects in external nasal tumor resection. Methods A total of 27 cases of external nasal tumor were admitted into our hospital from June 2012 to June 2014. There were 18 males and 9 females, aged 31-90 years old, mean aged 59 years old, with a history of 6 months to 50 years. There were 7 cases of benign tumor, 4 cases of seborrheic keratosis, 2 cases of pleomorphic adenoma and 1 case of hemangioma. There were 20 cases of malignant tumor, 14 cases of basal cell carcinoma and 6 cases of squamous cell carcinoma. All tumors were removed by surgery. Tunnel flaps were designed to repair the defects depending on the invasion depth and location of the tumor. Results All tunnel flaps repaired the defects successfully at the primary stage and got a natural appearance and similar skin color two months later. All patients felt well at their appearances. There was only 1 case of squamous cell carcinoma recurrence, which was excised again and received radiotherapy in a 3 months to 2 years follow-up. Conclusion Tunnel flaps have a high survival rate and natural appearance in external nasal tumor resection. Patients feel satisfied at their appearance.
