A bibliometric and visualization analysis of traditional Chinese medicine for sudden sensorineural hearing loss based on CiteSpacee

Abstract: Objective To examine the research landscape, hotspots, and emerging trends in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)for sudden sensorineural hearing loss(SSNHL)from 2000 to 2024. Methods Literature related to TCM interventions for SSNHL published between January 1, 2000, and July 31, 2024, was retrieved from the China National Knowledge Infrastructuredatabase. CiteSpace 6.2R6 was used to generate visual knowledge maps, analyzing publication trends, authors, institutions, and keywords. Results A total of 805 articles were included. Annual publication volume showed an overall upward trend with fluctuations. Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine ranked first with 40 publications, followed by Chengdu University of TCM(25)and Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine(22), establishing a core research axis with limited inter-institutional collaboration. The research team led by Bai Peng contributed the most publications(10), demonstrating strong intra-team collaboration but insufficient cross-team cooperation. Acupuncture and needle therapy have remained longstanding research priorities, with current focus shifting toward hearing recovery and clinical efficacy evaluation. Conclusion TCM research in SSNHL primarily centers on therapeutic approaches including acupuncture, acupoint injection, and blood circulation activation methods. Research hotspots are evolving from singular therapy evaluation toward etiological mechanisms, constitution regulation, and treatment timing optimization. Future development requires enhanced pharmacological and mechanistic studies of Chinese herbal medicine, multi-center collaborative networks, and integration of artificial intelligence technologies.
