Diagnosis of temporal bone destruction by volume rendering threedimensional reconstruction using high  resolution CT

Abstract: Objective: To explore the value of volume rendering(VR) threedimensional reconstruction in diagnosis of temporal bone destruction by high  resolution CT(HRCT). Methods: Fifteen cases of chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma were scanned with HRCT, whose original data were processed with VR and bone destructions observed in the images generated by this technique. Results: In all cases, 3DCT clearly delineated the destructions of the bone caused by cholesteatoma. The 3DCT generated images provided spatial relationships, which were not easily appreciated on two dimensional CT. Intraoperative bony destruction findings correlated with 3DCT findings. Conclusion: VR threedimensional reconstruction by HRCT has an important value to evaluate the invasiveness of cholesteatoma to temporal bone.
