Abstract: Objective: To determine the role and expression of interleukin5 in nasal mucous of allergic rhinitis by immunohistochemistry. Methods: The slides of 18 nasal mucous specimens of allergic rhinitis (group A), 21 of nasal polyps (group B) and 11 of control samples (group C) were stained with the mouse monoclonal antibodies of IL5. The positive cells per high powerfiled were counted. The data were analyzed with ANOVA using SPSS10.0 software. Results: The polyp specimens showed abundant IL5 stained cells and eosinophils. The numbers of positive cells and eosinophils in groups A and B were significantly higher than those in controls (P<0.01). Positive lymphocyte number in groups A and B was higher than that in group C, but did not differ significantly between groups A and B. Conclusion: IL5 is expressed in allergic rhinitis and nasal polyp tissue. It reflects the degree of immunology and inflammation and can be used as an index to diagnose allergic rhinitis.
