Trans-sphenoidal surgery via an endoscopic septum approach

Abstract: To investigate the approach and experience of endoscopic surgery in sphenoid sinus occupying lesions associated with a deviated septum. MethodsEndoscopic transsphenoidal approach septum surgeries were performed on 26 patients. The nasal septum was first corrected, second the butterfly mouth was found along the rear bony septum, then the anterior wall was opened and finally the sphenoid sinus disease was treated. ResultsAll surgeries were successfully completed by the approach of a trans-sphenoidal opening of the nasal septum. Symptoms of the patients completely disappeared after surgery. 24 cases were followed up for 6 to 12 months and no recurrence was found. In the other 2 cases, 1 with a sphenoid sinus cyst had a recurrence 7 months after the operation and the other with a sphenoid sinus polyp had a recurrence 10 months after the operation, but both were removed at the clinic. ConclusionThe endoscopic trans-sphenoidal approach septum surgery appears to be a safe and effective method because of its mild trauma and precise positioning.
