Abstract: To detect the expression of survivin, a novel inhibitor of apoptosis, in laryngeal carcinoma and to investigate its relation to pathological features of laryngeal carcinoma. Methods：Using streptavidinbiotinimmunohistochemistry(SABC), we studied the expression of survivin in 33 laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and 21 vocal cord polyp specimens which were paraffinembeded. All specimens were approved by pathological examination after operation. Results: Survivin expression was higher in laryngeal carcinoma (63.6%) than in vocal cord polyps(28.6%)(P＜0.05), but there was no significant correlation between survivin expression and age, gender, clinical stage, histological type and lymph node metastasis in laryngeal cancer patients. Conclusions: Apoptotic inhibitor survivin is highly expressed in laryngeal carcinoma but lowly in vocal cord polyps. It is thought that survivin may be a new predictor for the oncogenesis and progression of laryngeal carcinoma.
