Alcoholism in patients with benign symmetric lipomatosis (5 cases report)

Abstract: Objective To investigate the clinical characteristics of alcoholic patients with benign symmetric lipomatosis and improve the diagnosis and treatment. Method 5 patients underwent resection of neck lipomatous tumor with low collar incision under general anesthesia. While important tissue and organs were kept intact, fatty tissue were removed as much as possible. Result All patients were satisfactory with appearance and improved function without any complication. 5 patients were followed up for 3-5 years and no recurreence happened. Conclusion Madelung's disease is very rare. It's usually present in middle-aged men. The cause of this disease is attributed to excessive drinking and surgery is the most effective treatment. Abstinence from alcohol can effectively prevent the recurrence after operation.
