Abstract: Animal studies suggest that intermittent hypoxia due to obstructive sleep apnea(OSA)is a risk factor for breast cancer. Despite biological plausibility, human epidemiological studies have shown inconsistent results. However, a recent meta-analysis of seven large studies with a total of 5 370 466 patients showed that patients with OSA had a 36% increased risk of breast cancer compared to patients without OSA(HR 1.36, 95%CI 1.03-1.80). This article reviews the research on the relationship between OSA and breast cancer, including the possible pathogenesis of OSA-associated breast cancer.

Key words: Breast cancer, Hypoxia, Mechanism, Obstructive sleep apnea
