Objective To explore the correlation between blood lipids and sudden sensorineural hearing loss(SSHL), in order to provide preventive measures. Methods A total of 68 SSHL cases(SSHL group)and 80 non-SSHL cases(control group)were enrolled. The level of total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C), apolipoprotein A(Apo-A)and apolipoprotein B(Apo-B)in the two groups of patients were measured and compared. Results There was statistical difference in the level of TG between the two groups(P<0.05), while there was no statistical difference in the other indicators(P>0.05). There was no statistical difference in the blood lipids between patients with different curves of audiology and patients with various degrees of hearing loss(P>0.05). Conclusion Increased TG level is related to the occurrence of the SSHL. Controlling the level of TG may help to prevent SSHL.

Objective To observe and summarize the clinical characteristics of posterior semicircular canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo(PSC-BPPV)at the time of acute onset, and to provide the clinical evidences for earlier diagnosis. Methods The clinical manifestations at the time of acute onset of 115 cases of patients with PSC-BPPV diagnosed were collected retrospectively. The gender, distributions of age, character of dizziness, state of patients at the time of acute onset, relationships between vertigo attack and head movement, nystagmus, associated symptoms, and auxiliary examination were analyzed. Results The clincal characteristics of PSC-BPPV at the time of acute onset were summarized as follow:(1) incidence among female patients was more higher than that of male patients; (2) participants aged over 50 years-old were more vulnerable to be affected;(3) acute vertigo occurred mainly at time of getting up, lying down, turning over or moving head actively or passively to a certain position, especially getting up in the morning; (4) the onset of severe vertigo was associated with nausea and vomitting; (5) part of patients presented characteric rotatory nystagmus of PSC-BPPV at the time of initial routine physical examination; (6) without symptoms and signs of cochlear and nervous system; (7) without related positive findings by cranial imaging(CT or MRI). Conclusion The diagnosis of PSC-BPPV should be considered if patients presented vertigo attack suddenly but without symptoms and signs of coclear and nervous system and related positive findings by cranial imagings. It is helpful to earlier confirming of the diagnosis by performing Dix-Hallpike manuvre.

Objective To explore potential mechanisms of vestibular function damage in nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC)patients after intensity-modulated radiotherapy(IMRT). Methods Patients who received radical IMRT for their NPC were recruited. The serum levels of IL-6 and IL-17 were detected with ELISA method. Vestibular evoked myogenic potential(VEMP)tests were used to evaluate vestibular function and correlation analyses were used to analyze the potential mechanisms of vestibular function damage. Results Thirty-eight patients were included. The mean and maximum radiation doses to the inner ears were both significantly associated with abnormal ocular VEMP(oVEMP)and cervical VEMP(cVEMP)(P<0.05, all), but the correlations were all mild. There were no significant correlations between otitis media(OM)and abnormal oVEMP and cVEMP(P>0.05). The serum levels of IL-6 and IL-17 in NPC patients both increased and were significantly associated with abnormal oVEMP and cVEMP after irradiation(P<0.05, all). Conclusion The radiation doses to the inner ears were associated with the incidence of vestibular function damage, but the correlations were mild. OM had no relations with the incidence of vestibular function damage in present study. The inflammatory responses and possible resolution obstacles of inflammation participated in persistent vestibular function damage after irradiation.

Objective To compare and analyze the clinical application value of three surgical methods in adult patients undergoing tonsillectomy. Methods Ninety patients who received tonsillectomy were divided into coblation tonsillectomy(coblation group, n=30), electrocautery tonsillectomy(electrocautery group, n=30), and conventional tonsillectomy(conventional group, n=30). The duration of the entire operation, amount of intraoperative and postoperative bleeding, postoperative sore throat assessed using a visual analogue scale(VAS), and hospital costs were all recorded in three groups. Results Significant difference was shown among three groups by comparison to the operation time, amount of blood loss and the VAS scores of postoperative pain 1-4 d after surgery(P<0.001), in which the above indexes of coblation group and electrocautery group were all superior to those of conventional group(P<0.001), but there was no statistical significance between coblation group and electrocautery group(P>0.05). One patient encountered primary hemorrhage after surgery in conventional group, whereas no postoperative hemorrhage in coblation group and electrocautery group. There was no statistical significance among three groups by comparison to the nursing and examination/treatment expenses as well as postoperative charges for medicine(P>0.05). The total hospital cost in electrocautery group and conventional group was obviously lower than that in coblation group(P<0.001), but no significant difference was shown between electrocautery group and conventional group(P>0.05). Conclusion Each of the three surgical methods in adult tonsillectomy has its own advantages and disadvantages. In the clinical practice, the most appropriate surgical method should be selected so as to achieve the optimal therapeutic effect based on the disease characteristics, willingness and economic capability of patients, technical level of surgeons and medical instruments.

Objective To explore the Influence of TransPRK and LASEK on postoperative vision, diopter and corneal biomechanical properties in myopic eyes with thin cornea. Methods Totally 118 patients with myopia and astigmatism were enrolled, in which data of 118 right eyes were selected and analyzed, 61 eyes of 61 patients undergoing TransPRK were designed as TransPRK group, and 57 eyes of 57 patients undergoing LASEK as LASEK group. The uncorrected visual acuity(UCVA), diopter, central corneal thickness(CCT), posterior corneal surface height, aspheric parameter Q value, corneal hysteresis(CH), corneal resistance factor(CRF)and corneal aberration between two groups were compared 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after operation. Results There were no statistical difference between two groups regarding the proportion of postoperative UCVA reaching or exceeding preoperative best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)one week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after operation. The proportion of patients’ diopter reaching or exceeding preoperative desired diopter correction was higher in TransPPK than LASEK group 1 week and 1 month after operation(P<0.05). Compared with pre-operation, the posterior corneal surface height shifted rearward slightly(P<0.05), but aspheric parameter Q value didnt change significantly(P>0.05)in postoperative 6 months in the two groups. The CH, and CRF value on postoperative 1, 3 and 6 months were significantly lower than pre-operation in two groups(P<0.05). The coma aberration, spherical aberration, and higher order aberration after postoperation were higher than pre-operation(P<0.01), but there was no significant difference between two group regarding CH, CRF, coma aberration, spherical aberration, and higher order aberration at each time point after operation. Conclusion TransPPK, as emerging surface refractive surgery, is effective and safe in treating myopic eyes with thin cornea, with stable diopter, for it is operated not on the eyeball and has little effect on the corneal surface morphology and biomechanical properties.

Objective To study the distribution of corneal astigmatism among middle aged and senior citizens with cataract. Methods The gender, age, nation, corneal astigmatism, minimum value of corneal curvature and maximum value of corneal curvature of 489 cataract patients(630 eyes)from First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University between July 2014 and October 2015 were collected, and the patients were divided into groups according to their gender, age, eyes and astigmatism type. Results The subjects in this study were aged between 47 and 98 years, among whom 234(302 eyes)were male and 255(328 eyes)were female. The astigmatic power were bigger than 2.00 D in 32 eyes(5.08%), between 1.01D and 2.00 D in 175 eyes(27.78%), and smaller than 1.00 D in 423 eyes(67.14%). The astigmatic power was positively correlated with the age(r=0.193, P=0.020). With-the-rule astigmatism was found in 240 eyes(38.10%),against-the-rule astigmatism in 360 eyes(57.14%), and oblique astigmatism in 30 eyes(4.76%). With the increase of age, the portion of with-the-rule astigmatism became smaller, the portion of against-the-rule astigmatism became bigger, but no definite trend was found for oblique astigmatism. Conclusion With the increase of age, the corneal astigmatism in cataract patients has an increase trend, and with-the-rule astigmatism gradually changes into against-the-rule astigmatism.

Vocal cord leukoplakia is a white-plaque disease due to long-term stimulation on vocal cords, which includes abnormal epithelial hypertrophy and dysplasia of the vocal cord. The term “white plaque” is clinically describing any white lesion on a mucous membrane that cannot be wiped off or ascribed to any specific condition(eg, Candidal infection). There is a consensus that vocal cord leukoplakia has no histologic implications and synonymous with cancer or malignancy, only as a clinical descriptive diagnosis. In this paper, we reviewed the relationship between vocal cord leukoplakia and premalignant lesions and the formation mechanism, histopathologic classification, clinical diagnosis and treatment of vocal cord leukoplakia.

In this paper, we reviewed the relevant studies on glaucoma patients’ quality of life, including glaucoma-related concepts, status of quality of life, assessment instruments and influencing factors. At present, there are no sufficient assessment instruments available, and nor comprehensive studies on the psychological and social factors which can affect quality of life. In addition, clinical interventions still need to be validated. Therefore, specific assessment instruments should be developed to explore the influencing factors of quality of life in large-sample and multicentric studies.

Case teaching is a teaching method that can improve students’ analytical ability. The construction of case database can support case teaching and its orderly development, including the following steps: collecting clinical data, systemizing the teaching syllabus and targets, and finalizing. The database includes subjects on otology, nasology, throat, head and neck cancer surgery. Each case includes general information, complaints, history, symptoms, physical examinations, auxiliary examinations, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. And the corresponding search term is selected. Cases are divided into introduction and improvement ones, or typical and atypical ones. The contents of database are constantly revised to make them more suitable for the teaching of clinical postgraduates.
