Abstract: Objective To evaluate the efficacy of budesonide nasal drops administered in the head extension position for the treatment of otitis media with effusion(OME)in children with adenoid hypertrophy. Methods Sixty-two patients with OME accompanied by adenoid hypertrophy were included in this study and were divided into a treatment and a control group. The 31 patients in the treatment group received budesonide nasal drops in the head extension position while the 31 patients in the control group underwent watchful waiting. Electro-otoscopy and acoustic impedance audiometry were performed every 2 weeks. The efficacy of treatment was compared between the groups. Results The efficacy of budesonide nasal drops was 83.87% while that of the control group treatment was 61.29%, with a significant difference between the two management approaches(P<0.05). Conclusion It is highly efficient to administer budesonide nasal drops in the head extension position to treat OME in children with adenoid hypertrophy.
